The "out of swap" messages appeared in the (discarded) case where both swap and everything else were on the same microSD card. 16 GB wasn't quite enough to let buildworld/buildkernel finish. The failure was lack of storage space, the "out of swap" a side effect. The logfiles presented were subsequent to that failure, with extra space for /usr/src provided on a USB flash drive.
