You would think so, although I usually try to buy only "obsolete" hardware to give the drivers a chance to mature. That saves money too :) > > Items #2 and #3 are the same. FWIW without ACPI the boot dies at trying to mount md0. Please use it, and stick with it. Yes, it does work on 6.3. This thread is tangential to the problem I'm trying to fix. I'm experienced enough to know that noone is going to fix the kldload issue on 6.3. If I can get to 7.0-whatever there's at least some chance someone will look at it. My initial thought was to regression test the CDs. So I tried every one that I had lying around. This included 6.1 and 6.2, neither of which appear to have AHCI support, hence the messing about with the BIOS. [I've now tested 6.0 as well. The CDROM has some issue which results in danger will robinson. Presumably fixed in later versions.] Noone has yet suggested a source for 7.0-CURRENT boot CDROMs so I'm a bit stuck at the moment. > > Here's added proof that AHCI works fine on 6.3: > > $ dmesg -a | grep -i ahci > atapci1: <Intel AHCI controller> port > 0x30e8-0x30ef,0x30dc-0x30df,0x30e0-0x30e7,0x30d8-0x30db,0x30b0-0x30bf mem > 0xe0000400-0xe00007ff irq 19 at device 31.2 on pci0 atapci1: AHCI Version > 01.10 controller with 4 ports detected > $ uname -r -s > FreeBSD 6.3-PRERELEASE > > The adX device renumbering is expected. I don't think so either. Or at least, if this (ATA) is the problem it's also broken for legacy settings as well. I'll try this. IIRC a CDROM spinup issue was mentioned in the HP laptop thread with the same issue (boot from CDROM). > > I have a feeling the problem isn't related to the CDROM, but I'm not > entirely sure how to debug it. The exact problem I have. I guess I should have Googled the mobo, not just the server model. The box ships with a DVD so old hardware shouldn't be an issue. I'll find another CDROM drive and try it. This also suggests this may be a CDROM (RE) issue not an O/S issue. This would tie in with the HP laptop. I'll try an source or binary upgrade from 6.3. >http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=666686 This references FreeBSD 5.0/5.1, which I assume is not a typo. > > Also, can you make sure your BIOS revision is 1.1a, just to rule out any > BIOS-related issues? Yes it is, and (for the archive) that's the only one available. I managed to get a verbose boot from the 7.0-RELEASE CDROM, if that's any use to anyone. After the sig again.
