I looked thru the README and install files, then the libpng.mak file, 
none of them said you needed the latest and greatest libpng version.  
Where did you see the requirement for 0.89c?  It does point towards the 
latest version in libpng.mak, but it doesn't seem to say it wouldn't work 
with 0.88....
