Some pollers are not very efficient in the way that they collect and write information to rrd files. Also, I've seen users setup RRD files with redundant information, which means you may be writing the same data multiple times. If you know that the collection and writing of data is about as efficient as possible, then my advice would be to get faster disks and use hardware RAID.
