Quoting the PR:

  "switches from lzip to xz since it appears that xz is more popular,
   we have it in the base system, and it does not make a real difference
   compression-wise."

It should be noted that .lz had been slowly gaining popularity and more
software are using it these days (astro/gnuastro, ftp/wget, lang/guile2,
to name a few).

Lzip often offers better compression ratio and archival features compared
to the common .gz, .bz2, or .xz formats.  The latter had been criticized
as being inadequate for long-term archiving [*].

FreeBSD natively (in the base system) supports .lz archives.  That said,
you might want reconsider .xz preference.
