the config was my first suspect too, but no, it's not the guilty: my
"current"
is FreeBSD 3.3 and just to make sure that I run the correct version of
config I
rebuilt it from /usr/src/usr.sbin/config

yes - that' just about what I usually do to rebuild a kernel   :-|
