 Just to follow up on this, I just tried the boot floppy for
 FreeBSD 5.0-DP1 CURRENT.  The problem did NOT
 occur with this version.
 
 I'm not sure about older FreeBSD versions.
 This looks like a problem in the 4.4-4.6 boot floppies.
