I can rebuild _everything_ again to > see if this helps... I have two GNOME 1.4.1 -stable machines, and neither have this problem. I run galeon as my browser, and rarely run Mozilla by itself (however, everytime I launch Mozilla, it works). You may want to try a rebuild for librep, rep-gtk, and sawfish just to see if that helps.
