You situation sounds similar to mine.
I have NT4 on one machine and BSD 3.4-RC on another. My modem is on the BSD
machine and the two machines are connected by ethernet. The BSD machine
dials out for either of them. I preferred to hardcode any ip addresses on
the NT4 client; not a hardcoded "disconnected" ip address for itself or the
BSD machien, not my isp's dns servers, no hosts files, etc.. I have the BSD
machine running dhcpd; the bsd machine is something like the default dhpcd
gateway and the "normal" default gateway. Once I knew what settings to edit,
it was easy. I also have Samba (and nmbd) on the BSD machine for peer file
sharing.

My configuration files are not handy..
