Hmmmm. Another "constant" I have changed since this problem initially occured here is a BIOS option labelled something like "IDE Prefetch...". This was set to ENABLED by default, but I set it to disabled at the same time I also disabled softupdates. Since afterwards the system seemed to run more stable, I will now have to find out which change (IDE Prefetch or softupdates) made the difference.
