I tried this at home and got this error when I forgot the other partition
on the system is NTFS.  I got a kernel message, "Not a valid FAT32
filesystem," however.

Try doing this:

dd if=/dev/ad1s1 of=temp bs=512 count=1
od -bc temp | head

The first few bytes of the filesystem should be 'aa55' (or 55aa, I
forget), and not 'NTFS'. :-)
