I wonder if his problems aren't so much Linux as they are some crappy distribution. All too many of them decide that the "classic" linux isn't good enough, so they do stuff their own way. I include RedHat, Suse and Debian in the aforementioned distros. I stumbled upon Slackware and it's nearly perfect. Small, compact. All it needs is a ports like package management, and it would be completely perfect! Of course, it is penultimate only to FreeBSD...
