Well, right now, it's looking like this:

x11/gnome-base	the minimal amount of bloat in order to ensure
that the GNOME environment functions correctly
in a (possibly) non-GNOME window manager etc.
(20 or so ports, not including generic stuff
			like gtk, esound, imlib etc..)

x11/gnome depends on gnome-base, brings in more bloat for
a standalone GNOME environment (including a
			window manager)

x11/gnome-extras	a convenience mechanism to bring in a whole bunch
of other bits and pieces for the "full GNOME
			experience"

The comparison with KDE is incorrect, since you're looking at the
underlying widget set. The equivalent to QT in the GNOME world is
GTK+, and you most certainly do not need to install all of GNOME to
use that.

Sure. Once I'm happy with the beta2 setup (ie: it compiles, and
appears to run), I'll stick the patches, plus source tarballs
(if you can't get them elsewhere -- the GNOME mirrors are, umm,
being "reorganized" :) for other people to play with before doing
the commit from hell and taking a 3 month vacation.
