In today's world graphics/Mesa is only a placeholder - the real MesaGL library is now buindled with XFree86 (and is tightly integrated with GLX/DRI stuff so that it is no easy to unbuindle it), therefore if XFree86 4.x is installed graphics/Mesa only installs libglu, which doesn't change much from version to version.
