They look different. :) Why don't you try "diff -c" and "diff -u" on same set of files. The main difference is that "diff -c" has two chunks of code, one for the original and one for the changed, with "!" marking the parts that changed, while "diff -u" has everything smashed together with "-" marking the original and "+" for the newer lines.
