Yes. I have one LH3 2xPII/400 here and it works very well with FreeBSD. Keep in mind that Squid is really efficient (it uses threads instead of forking a new process for each request, for example), but any proxy server software needs a large quantity of memory and mass storage. Let's say at least 128 MB RAM and 4 GB dedicated disk space for a low-end installation. It would be nice if your LH3 had the second CPU installed, too... but this shouldn't be a strict requirement. Anyway, the requirements depend from the load you'll be facing. > Are there any difficulties about hardware with HP NetServer? The only problem is the internal hardware RAID system: HP NetRAID. It isn't supported by FreeBSD, so you can't use it with FreeBSD. Use the two AIC-7880 controllers. If you absolutely need RAID, you have to buy a DPT card or a SCSI-to-SCSI controller from Mylex, CMD, etc. We recently bought a CMD-5440 and it's a very good product. I also know that there's an "unofficial" driver for some Compaq RAID card(s). If your machine will be a Squid server only, probably you don't need RAID. > Could you give us some advice? Install the HP utility partition, then install FreeBSD 3.1 without modifying the boot block and track the 3.1-STABLE tree. You will find more info about STABLE on the website, starting from the applications' page. --- Stefano Riva Software Engineer - Systems Administrator Informazioni Editoriali I.E.
