Ok, let's sink this right here and now. The major source of problems with the US <-> Australia link is and has been for some time the equipment/configuration/administration at the US end of things. You can see this for yourself (from here) by pinging/tracerouting across the link; everything's fine until you're several hops _off_ the wire at the US end. For all that we cuss Telstra, they actually do a tolerably good job.
