It looks like the recursive name server is doing something weird. Can you have a look in your /etc/resolv.conf and get the IP address for your name server and then do: dig aaaa www.google.com @IP_ADDRESS_OF_NAME_SERVER dig a www.google.com @IP_ADDRESS_OF_NAME_SERVER Do you know what is acting as your recursive DNS server?
