It is the only supported package management tool, and installing ports *is* installing packages. Any users who continue to use and update FreeBSD with ports or packages after September 2014 must switch to pkg. > 2. So yes, it is time to switch to pkg (the preferred name now). If the old pkg_* commands are still present, do not use them after the switch. The message on portmaster needs to be updated. Switching to the new package database is a one-time thing.
