And then i remembered having to copy the tools.jar form $JAVA_HOME/lib to $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib when i installed tomcat. when i copied the tools.jar from 1.4.2 to $CATALINA_HOME/common/lib and attmpted to start it tcat ran as expected. hope this helps : jerry
