I think the real question we need to answer here is: Would people be willing to subscribe to a *different* subscription plan where a donation to FreeBSD, Inc was already factored in? If the answer to this question is a significant yes, I'll push with Walnut Creek CDROM to set something up. We are starting to get significant donations now and while we're still nowhere near the point where we could actually hire people with the funds available, that's definitely a goal of mine.
