This points to multiple problems. 1) You didn't download the files in binary mode. 2) Your DOS partition was FIPS'd and now FreeBSD can't read it right. 3) You have a geometry problem. Try putting a small DOS partition on the disk, then delete it in the fdisk editor and proceed as normal.
