The question is not "how fast is fast forwarding?", but "why is it crashing?" I can imagine small timing changes speeding up a session between other boxes. Andrew, when it crashes, what are the symptoms? if it really panics, then there should be a panic message. if not then you should include DDB in the kernel (and not start X) so that you can get a stack trace/coredump.
