Grr.  Following on from my losing question; for some reason upping the 
maxfd parameter to FD_SETSIZE (from the calculated max fd+1) in my
test program fixed everything.

The driver fragment as posted is fine (although zeroing the selp fields
after the selwakeup call is redundant).
