The kernel is in /usr/src/sys/i386/conf
If you can't find it there start sysinstall and go into:
Custom
Distributions
Custom (press space bar over it)
Sources (press space bar over it)
Sys (press space bar)


for compilation instructions see the handbook. There is a section on how
to compile the kernel.
