Yes, I had the graphical daemon screensaver on. When it hangs the daemon is in suspension (but oddly, the figure remains on the screen!) and the screen 'does not fill with vertical black and white stripes' as reported by Pete F. And yes, it doesn't happen all the time, just on random occasions.
