Any reason to not go with CVS 1.8.1?  It built out of the box for me,
but I haven't merged in the FreeBSD changes.  If people would like a
set of diffs with those changes merged in, say the word and I'll
generate it.

Last time this came up I recall there was some reason people didn't
want to do this, but I could be misremembering.
