yes I do it like this:
makefs -t ffs -B big -s 40m rootfs.img path/to/root
dd it if=3Drootfs.img of=3D/dev/da0 bs=3D1m

I found a very old kernel image I had and it boot root from usb, but
the one I am compiling gives this error:
