That's why > it's quicker. Ah-HA!! You're right, I did specify NOPROFILE, but I did it in /etc/make.conf, not on the command-line. I did so _not_ because of the "worldstone thread" that you mention but simply because of the the way the option is listed in /etc/make.conf without any warnings (like "make world may fail if you do this," or something).
