I first thought it might be an a/v-sync problem, but -A null produces the same behaviour. I tweaked the sysctl values as described in the documentation of xine, the machine is an AMD Athlon TB 1400 with lots of memory running -CURRENT (with WITNESS and INVARIANTS turned off) and XFree-4.2.0, which is seemingly quite idle while xine is running.
