Once the kernel is loaded into memory, the machine immediately powers off. Several people have experienced this. The NetBSD 2.0.2 and OpenBSD 3.7 generic kernels work fine. All 2.6.7-2.6.13 linux kernels work. I qemu'ed a i386 install only to have the same behavior when booting freebsd off the hard disk.
