Users of older systems [...] Unfortunately, that statement is ambiguous: FreeBSD 4.11 (Jan. 2005) is _not_ older than 5.3 (Nov. 2004). However, I guess that's not what the release notes really mean. For the mentioned update from 4.x to 6.x, I would go via a binary upgrade, which has probably fewer pitfalls and is finished a lot faster than a source upgrade.
