Subject: thinkpad 770 -current ccb IRQ (hence ep0) broken between 20040204-20040310?

Hi,

I have a thinkpad 770 type 9549 - (see appended dmesg and pciconf -vl below for details) whose ep0 device (3com 3ccfe574bt) stopped being detected after a routine kernel/world rebuild on March 10th. I think it arises from this dmesg snippet

cbb0: <TI1250 PCI-CardBus Bridge> mem 0x20822000-0x20822fff at device 2.0 on pci0
cardbus0: <CardBus bus> on cbb0
pccard0: <16-bit PCCard bus> on cbb0
: ROUTE_INTERRUPT failed.
cbb: Unable to map IRQ...
device_probe_and_attach: cbb0 attach returned 12
cbb0: <TI1250 PCI-CardBus Bridge> mem 0x20821000-0x20821fff at device 2.1 on pci0
cardbus1: <CardBus bus> on cbb0
pccard1: <16-bit PCCard bus> on cbb0
: ROUTE_INTERRUPT failed.
cbb: Unable to map IRQ...
device_probe_and_attach: cbb0 attach returned 12

I am posting to this list after lightweight search on other forums/threads for people experiencing the same thing.

The 770 was flashed to the latest IBM provided bios about 10 months ago. Also, I am aware that this is fairly old and relatively specialized hardware, so since it is being used as a baby firewall machine, i have left out any ACPI or APM functionality.

The system was working fine (with no/zero/nada loader.conf or pccard.conf/devd.conf tweaking) and tracking cvsup under freebsd-current up to and including its last successful kernel build February 4th, 2004.

On March 10th, in response to the TCP d.o.s. security advisory I rebuilt kernel/world.

On reboot pf caused the machine to panic, when I turned off pf the cause of the panic was traced to the ep0 network interface not existing anymore. It had prior to the rebuild. I was and am using very lightly modified GENERIC without OLDCARD.

After a fruitless cursory search of the lists to see if this was a well known issue, and hoping that I had just hit a "moment" in 5-current, I waited a week for stabilization.

I rebuilt again 20040313 - and there seemed a fair amount of code updated - and a sizable number of changes when running mergemaster. The machine came back up without issues - but still without ep0. And still with all sorts of pci issues in dmesg.

I believe the issue originates from cbb not getting an IRQ (see dmesg below). Although I have an ee background I have strayed from the true path and have only a very vague idea of what this means.

I see a lot of traffic about ACPI issues and BIOS pnp in the lists, the closest I can find to my specific issue is this thread

http://www.bsdforums.org/forums/sho...8&highlight=cbb

which does not resolve the specific or a general issue.

In conclusion,

1. Does anyone have any ideas on a quick fix?

2. Or where I should drag my sorry ass to find the not-so-quick fix

3.Worst case scenario where - can anyone suggest a robust pcmcia NIC that works OOTB on generic 5-current on a thinkpad 770?

Thanks in advance for any help!
