Using clang by commenting out FAVORITE_COMPILER in make.conf does let firefox build. Since there are so many ports (mostly libraries) that I've had to compile with gcc48 for the development that happens on this machine, that's not an ideal path forward. I will also try gcc5, perhaps by specifying "USE_GCC=4.9+" during the firefox build. At least that I can force to happen for upgrades in /usr/local/etc/pkg.conf without breaking all the 4.8-interdependent libraries. Perhaps this is worthy of a note in UPDATING?
