I recommend checking out the docs at
ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/alpha/3.2-STABLE/
where many questions will be answered.

An aside:  NCR\Symbios controllers do NOT include Diamond's Fireport
thingie.

Stay tuned for more/better/additional information from more
knowledgeable sources.
