I have some more information about this now. There is a BIOS knob
"USB IRQ" which can be set to Disabled or Enabled. If it is Disabled,
the hangs occur as I described. If it is Enabled, everything works
fine. I think it ought to boot in either case (-4.x does). I am not
actually using the USB ports, so it seems silly to tie up an interrupt
for them.

PNP OS is set to "no" in the BIOS, by the way.

I hooked up a serial console and grabbed the verbose boot messages
from both cases. They are attached. "dmesg.bad" is from the case that
hangs, and "dmesg.good" is from the case that doesn't. Do a diff
between the two and you'll see a few interrupt-related things that
look interesting. The kernel config file "TEST" is attached also,
though apparently all that matters is that device uhci is configured
in.

I have a strong suspicion that backing out "sys/pci/uhci_pci.c"
revision 1.32 will make this problem go away. I'll test that next.

Does this help sufficiently, or do I still need to dig into it with
DDB and the golden paper clip?

John
