i rebuilt the 4.4-RELEASE version with -g and copied it over to the
4.3-RELEASE laptop and poked the AirCard in and waited for it do die.

the backtrace says that it died at line 647 in cardd.c with sp=0x8072100:

sp->config->index = cisconf->id;
