:or directly to tape ? I send mine to disk first, tape later. Never seen a
:problem, but the recipient machine is doing pretty well nothing else at the
:time of the dump. Its about 10 gig of backup for a level 0.

The dump is occuring over the network. It's the machine being dumped
that is going poof, not the machine recording the results.

ssh machine B -n dump ... > file
(dump runs on this machine, outputs
back to machine A over the ssh link)

This is the machine that is dying.
I don't bother with tape any more. After years of using tape I finally
gave up. Tape's just don't have the capacities to be useful any more.
Now I just backup & gzip -9 to big honking hard drives on an offsite
machine and do an occassional hard copy on DVD.
Consider disk storage these days... 80G drives are standard. 140G is
coming soon (if not here already), and within a few years standard
form factor HD's wil be up to 400G. Backup to tape? I don't think so.
