Tty-level errors come from the application; it can't process infomation
fast enough. 
Try dropping the baudrate.

That's OK.

Segfaults?  Odd.

Try upgrading your version of ppp from
http://www.freebsd.org/~brian/ppp.html.  (maybe userppp.html)
