I don't know about the bash questions, they are usually better handled (I 
think) on the usenet bash group, but as to tcsh, earlier version of tcsh 
did a lookup on the hostname when they started up.  This has been fixed, 
I understand, so why don't you go into ports and recompile tcsh, and use 
the new version?  If you have any troubles under that version, I'd be 
surprised.
