I feel like such an idiot. The "obvious" problem was with my /etc/ttys - I misread the output of diff, thinking the mistakes were in the latest distribution, not mine - (I rarely think to blame myself - perhaps I will in future). In return for this timewasting, I hereby promise to do some ports (I'll start with the cfs crypto filesystem), and buy beers to anyone who ever comes to visit Amsterdam. Gary
