It probably doesn't lock up, it's just that X no longer runs.  Try to
log into your machine from another terminal (or type ctrl-alt-backspace)
and verify this.  Remember:  There's a BIG difference between "my system
locks up" and "my X server doesn't start" - please verify which is which
before reporting one or the other.
