FWIW, I've used FreeBSD with both an genuine Adaptec card as well as a New
Media Toast'n'Jam Sound+SCSI (which uses the same chipset) to drive a NEC
8x CD-ROM and a Iomega Jaz 1 GB removable cartridge drive, with absolutely
no problems.
