Sounds like the bootloader doesn't know where your drive is (which is common if you swap in a root drive). Assuming you're using the standard FreeBSD bootloader, have you tried re-initializing the MBR with fdisk? Can't remember the switch, see the fdisk man page. Just a thought - this has happened to me when moving hard drives around.
