There is no 'try' > ----------------------------------------------------------------------Yoda > Hi Wilko, The 1742A with the latest Adaptec BIOS has been rock solid for every peripheral I have thrown at it for about 5 years. Recently, I had all seven ID's taken up. 4 internal devices and three external ones. I have mixed and matched scsi devices up and down the scsi cable and I have never had any problems. Once, I had a bad passive terminator at the end of the external scsi bus, but that was easy to diagnose and fix. The 1742 bios was rev'ed a lot in the early days of the 1742. If you have an older board, you will experience lots of wierd behavior. Some devices will work only when they are the third device on the scsi cable, etc ... Adaptec cured most of those problems through firmware modifications. Try accessing their ftp site at ftp://ftp.adaptec.com. Their latest 1742 Bios can be found there. Use the 1742XAS.EXE version ( the 1742XA version is corrupted ). I replaced my bios a couple of years ago and life has been good to me until last week :-) - Steven Bartling
