Library functions, other than err(3), should never call any of the
err(3) functions which exit (despite the hooks I added to let consumers
capture the exit attempt).  Most library functions should refrain from
generating output on stderr as well (despite the hooks I added to let
consumers redirect the output).

Having said that, a general namespace cleanup of the C library would
be a good thing.  I no longer have the personal inclination to worry
about it too much.  If you've ever wondered what sys/syscall-hide.h
was for....
