Thanks a lot, Matthew.  I was sort of waiting for someone with a local 
server to see if that or something else had solved it for them.  This 
is an inhereted server that is in another country, about 2,500 miles 
away, but a CR/sales person will be visiting them next week so I will 
try to prepare him to reboot kernel.old if it doesn't work.  I probably 
need a little more exitement in my life but I'm not sure that he does :D
