My guess is that you are the victim of the fact that MS-DOS never quite discovered zero. The fact that the initial com port is COM1 under DOS turns out being inconvenient in a zero-based world like Unix. Your error message says "/dev/cua02". That's the equivalent of MS-DOS's COM3.
