Not sure if this is responsible for some or all of the difficulties you had, but there is no native FreeBSD version of some of the plugins you mention. This has also resulted in complaints of some plugins not working with the native FreeBSD version of Opera. I haven't tried FreeBSD's flash plugin wrapper because I'm using the Linux version of Opera, but IIRC others have reported happy results.
