Possibly.  However it looks like putting "disable iface-alias" in
ppp.conf solved the problem I was having.  There is only one strange
symptom I found: pinging the dyndns.org URL from the local machine does
not respond (the machine can ping anything else successfully), but
pinging this URL from any machine on the LAN or even outside the LAN
responds properly.  This I can live with.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.  I never would have
guessed.
